Anne Rice finds Buddy Jesus
Oct 29th, 2005 by Jordan
So, apparently Anne Rice has decided that she is a Christian. Yes, the Anne Rice who wrote the Vampire Chronicles and a little soft-core erotica while she was at it. The MSNBC article on the new book says that Anne left the church at 18, but now she’s making a comeback for the Lord.
Hmm.
As a side-note, I am a little miffed at the reference to low-IQs for people who read her books…
Call me an intellectual snob if you must, but I’ve made it a point to give Anne Rice’s novels a wide berth. It’s not that I’ve got anything against a good vampire story, it’s just that many of the grown-ups I’ve encountered who have a large collection of her books would be lucky to get a two-digit score on an IQ test.
Yes, you are an intellectual snob. Sometimes people just want to read some fiction that doesn’t require one to mull sleeplessly throughout the night about what it’s saying… is that okay?
But back on the subject at hand, I’m not quite sure whether this is something I would read or not. I consider myself an atheist, and frankly I get tired and bored with the story of Jesus. I feel like it’s been rehashed so many damned times that one more shot at it is just too much. However, I do tend to find Rice’s stories to at least be entertaining and readable, if nothing else. And a story from this angle is at least one of the lesser-worked ones. The MSNBC article seems to allude that she’s planning on writing about his whole life, though, which will just bring us back to the same old tired story we’ve already read.
Well, for right now it’s not going on my wishlist. But once I read some of the reviews after it is released, I’ll consider it. Thinking about Anne Rice as a Christian writer, though… that’s like Alice Cooper doing a duet with Britney Spears — kinda.
